Table Restoration and Resizing
Custom Solid We offer a table restoration and remodellng service, mainly to customers in the London area for practical reasons. As well our restoring, we can also resize tables (to become smaller, larger or even a different shape) and supply custom-made extension leaves. Please use our restoration/remodelling form for any enquiries.
Can an old table be made useful again with restoration or resizing?
Yes. If you already have a solid wood table that is worn, stained, too big or no longer fits your room, it may not need replacing. At Tablemaker, we offer a practical and affordable way to extend the life of your existing furniture. We resurface, resize and rework solid oak and other timber tables so they can keep serving you for years to come. We can also build a new tabletop that works with your current frame if the base is still in good shape.
What types of table restoration do you offer?
We carry out detailed work on solid timber tables including:
-
Full sanding of the top surface to remove marks, water rings or heavy wear
-
Application of hardwax oil or food safe oil in your choice of clear or pigmented finish
-
Repairing split boards, warped edges or damaged corners
-
Upgrading the surface protection for longer durability
-
Adding or replacing straightening bars to reduce future movement
-
Replacing veneer or damaged tops with full stave solid oak
If the existing table is structurally sound but tired, we can usually refinish it to look and feel like new.
Can a table be resized to fit a different room?
Yes. We regularly resize solid wood tables so they work better in smaller rooms, new extensions or awkward layouts. We can:
-
Shorten the length or width by trimming and resealing the edges
-
Change the height by adjusting or replacing the legs
-
Round or bevel corners for safer edges
-
Add or remove table leaves if applicable
We can also replace only the top surface while keeping your original legs or frame. This can give you the look and strength of a new table without starting from scratch.
Materials We Work With
What materials do you work with?
We specialise in solid oak and also work with:
Beech, walnut, ash and pine
Birch plywood and some laminated timbers
Vintage and handmade bases
We often restore tables originally bought from high street brands or bespoke workshops including Heal’s, Ercol, IKEA, Neptune and John Lewis. We also repair handmade and one off pieces.
What condition is needed for restoration to be possible?
We can usually help if your table:
-
Has a solid wood top or one thick enough to sand
-
Has a frame that is still strong and stable
-
Is not too far gone with rot or major structural failure
If we cannot restore it safely or reliably, we will advise on making a new table that uses your preferred dimensions or features.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
Each job is quoted individually, but as a guide:
-
Sanding and oiling only: from £150
-
Surface repair and finishing: from £200
-
Top replacement (keeping frame): from £300
-
Full resize and refinishing: from £400
Most projects take 10 to 14 days. We confirm the lead time when quoting. You can drop off the table or we can arrange collection for a fee depending on your location.
