Our Range of Solid Oak Table Tops

The Tablemaker table top range is made to order in full stave oak and built to suit a wide range of uses. Whether you need a compact wood desk top, a round wooden table top for the kitchen, or a large piece of wood for a dining table or café refit, we offer a straightforward way to get exactly the size and shape you need. Rectangle, square and round table tops are available in lengths up to 280 centimetres and widths up to 115 centimetres, finished by hand in clear, warm or dark hardwax oil.

Each top is made to exact measurements, with the option to choose your thickness, edge style and add a rear cable notch for desks. Profiles can be softly rounded, bevelled or square, depending on what feels right for your space. Solid oak is strong, reliable and easy to live with – whether you’re building a new table from scratch, upgrading a sit stand desk or replacing an old veneer top with something that will last.

Our table tops are made to exact measurements. That means if you need a 147 centimetre table top, that is what we build. Edge profiles can be square, rounded or chamfered depending on the design.

What are wooden table tops used for and why choose a made to order solid wood version?

Wooden table tops are used for all sorts of purposes – from replacing an old desk surface to building a new dining table, fitting out a café or upgrading a lift top coffee table. A solid wood top gives you a surface that looks good, lasts longer and feels much better to use every day. When made to size, it means you can fit it exactly to the space you have, whether that’s a narrow home office, a round kitchen table or a 72 inch long shared desk. Our tops are built from full stave oak, not veneer or laminate, and they come finished in satin hardwax oil with options like cable notches, comfort edge profiles and extra thickness for a more substantial feel.

Common uses for our table tops

Customers choose Tablemaker for wooden table tops for quality, price and speed. We use only the best materials and give you a durable, luxury table top at a very honest price.

Replacement Tops For Tables

Many customers come to us wanting to keep their current base or legs but upgrade to a better surface. Whether it’s for a dining table with wooden top, a wood top coffee table or a glass topped wooden coffee table, we can supply the top only and cut it to the correct size. We also supply unfinished wood table tops if you want to apply your own finish at home.

Sit Stand Desk Upgrades

Our wood table tops are often used on electric and manual sit stand frames. Oak gives you a stable and attractive surface to work from. We offer rounded edges for comfort, and you can add a cable notch at the back so the desk sits flush against the wall. These work well with white base frames or metal frames, and look great in any home office.

DIY and Upcycling Projects

Our tops are used in all kinds of home and commercial DIY projects – from folding tables with wood tops to reclaimed wood table top refits. Interior designers often use our tops to pair with vintage metal bases or create custom wood dining table tops for small spaces. Whether it’s a wood top dining table or a round coffee table with glass top and oak trim, we make it to fit your setup.

Commercial Furniture Fit Outs

We regularly supply solid wood table tops for cafés, restaurants, wine bars and workspaces. Standard size is 60 by 60 centimetres, usually made in sets of five or more. The finish is food safe, durable and easy to maintain. These can be paired with wood table bases for glass tops or solid tops, depending on your setup. Our solid wood coffee table tops have also been used in lounges and client waiting areas.

Each piece can be made to your preferred length, width and height before checkout. These are built to order, not held in stock.

Shape and edge options

Rectangle, square or round

You can order a rectangular, square or round wood table top in your chosen size. Round wooden table tops are popular for dining rooms and café seating. Common sizes include 30 inch, 36 inch and 48 inch round wood table tops. We also make oval wood table tops or custom round wood tops for tables using reclaimed or salvaged bases. For coffee tables, we can supply round wood tops with glass inserts or a wood lift top coffee table surface to suit your base.

Edge profiles

We use a slight roundover edge as standard for a soft and comfortable feel. For desks or worktops, we can apply a deeper radius to the front edge for comfort when typing or writing. If you prefer something sharper or more architectural, bevel and chamfer profiles are also available. For a rustic or reclaimed look, we also offer live edge wood table tops on request.

Woods and finishes

What woods and finishes are available?

Oak is the standard

We use solid European oak for most of our table tops. It is long lasting, has a strong grain pattern and holds up well to repeat use. Oak can be sanded back and refinished over time which gives it an extended life.

You can pick from three finishes on all of our oak:

Clear for a clean, natural wood look

Warm for a golden tone that adds a little richness

Dark for more depth and contrast

These can be matched to your existing base or furniture. We also offer finish samples by post so you can compare them at home before you order. This is particularly helpful for matching a white table with wood top or dark base.

Satin hardwax oil finish

All of our tops are sealed with a satin hardwax oil that protects the surface while keeping the woodgrain visible. The finish is food safe, wipeable and easy to refresh later on. It works well in kitchens, dining rooms, offices and commercial spaces.

If you want to see how a finish will look before you buy, we offer wood finish samples you can order online.

Other woods we use

Ash, beech, pine, walnut and birch ply are also available. These can suit different budgets or match a specific look. Ash has a lighter tone and more visible grain. Beech is smooth and pale. Birch ply is strong with a clear edge and is good for smaller tables or tighter price points.

Finishing choices

We use hardwax oil for its durability and ease of repair. It comes in clear or pigmented tones. We also offer food safe oil for café tables or kitchen use. All finishes are low VOC and easy to maintain with oil refreshers or gentle cleaning products.

Wood movement and stabilising bars

Oak bars underneath

Wider tops are fitted with solid oak straightening bars underneath. These are routed into the underside and help prevent the top from cupping or bowing with seasonal changes in moisture. These are standard on all tops wider than 90 centimetres.

Natural movement in wood

Solid wood expands and contracts depending on heat and moisture levels in the room. It is best to keep the top away from radiators or damp walls, and to allow a little airflow around the edges. You can read more about care and placement in our wood maintenance guide.

Solid oak vs veneer or MDF

Solid oak tops last longer, feel better and can be sanded or re-oiled if needed. Veneer is a thin surface glued to MDF or chipboard. Once it chips or peels, it cannot be repaired. Our solid wood table tops are made from full stave oak, which means the grain runs the full length of the board and gives a much cleaner appearance. Whether you are replacing a round table wood top, adding a glass top on wooden dining table, or building a solid wood lift top coffee table, full stave oak gives better value and a more natural finish.

Caring for your wooden table top

how to look after a oak table - tablemaker

To keep your top looking good, clean with a damp cloth and mild soapy water. Dry it afterwards and avoid chemical sprays or abrasives. Re-oil once a year or if the surface starts to look dry. If you are wondering how to remove water stains from wood table top surfaces, the answer is usually to clean gently then apply a fresh coat of oil. For stubborn marks, use a fine sanding pad followed by oil. Full advice is in our wood table care guide.

Delivery and lead time

Most wood table tops are made and delivered within two to four weeks. Custom shapes, batches or thicker tops may take slightly longer. We deliver across the UK or you can collect from our Hornsey workshop. If you need a precise date or are working to a deadline, let us know and we will confirm availability before you order.
